Gozel Kushliyeva & Maya Meredova

Saturday & Sunday only, Canopy D

Growing up in Turkmenistan and attending Turkish schools, Gozel Kushliyeva and her sister Maya learned about handweaving, painting, designing, smocking and sewing. Today in Istanbul’s famous Grand Bazaar, calligraphers routinely decorate tiles, paper or other materials with elaborate and beautiful script. Though they often write in Latin script, their style of calligraphy is built upon the ancient tradition of Arabic script. Gozel’s artistry led her to explore Turkish calligraphy, and here in Utah she shares this art at Turkish and Middle Eastern cultural festivals.
