A Vejigante is a folkloric character that originated in the Festival of St. James the Apostle in LoĆza, Puerto Rico and represents the fusion of the different ethnicities that have come together to create modern Puerto Rican identity. Growing up in Puerto Rico in an artistic family and participating in local festivals, Alli learned to make Vejigante masks out of coconut husks that she carves, paints, and finishes by hand. She also creates miniature Vejigante masks out of ceramics, polymer clay, and wood.
