The Mexican town of Mata Ortiz is known for rich archeological sites containing a distinctive style of pre-Columbian pottery. A few generations ago local artisans began making pots inspired by this ancient pottery. Ana Brooks grew up in Mata Ortiz making pottery with her mother and grandmother. Although she moved to Utah nearly thirty years ago, she still makes pots using clay and colorful rock that she harvests from Utah’s mountains and deserts. Her sisters, Gloria and Elda Hernandez, have traveled from Mata Ortiz to join her in sharing their family art form.
