Many of the Burundian refugees who live in Salt Lake City were traditionally farmers and basket making has always been an important part of rural life. Baskets are used for household storage, ceremoniously delivered as wedding gifts, and even balanced atop the heads of dancers. Being able to make a beautiful basket is considered a necessary preparation for married life and important in attracting a husband.
